Deleting social media was the best thing that ever happened to me!

From January 13th to June 11th, I have been temporarily disabling and enabling my Threads account. At first it was just to take a break to focus on my mental health, but then I started to spot users and even my own mutuals either stealing my full posts outright or taking portions of my posts. At first I didn’t care and chose to post less, but then I spotted two people steal pieces of my poems- one a close mutual and one a stranger. I draw the line when it comes to poetry. It’s not “just a post” or “just words”, not even simply “intellectual property”, but my entire soul. On July 4th, I decided to keep Threads permanently deleted ever since. Changed the username to a language I didn’t understand, a password I didn’t remember, and disconnected my email after saving all my important posts and poems.

Deleting Threads was the best thing that ever happened to me. It led to me switching to alternative apps such as Writco for poetry, Substacks for journaling, and Tumblr for casual venting without the risks of being mocked, copied or “exposed” for having a genuine thought. Deleting Threads gave me free time to discover things such as portable keyboards. Deleting the app gave me so much awareness to focus on what actually matters like my future and spending that time doing things that get me paid. Once I deleted the app, I started getting As on all assignments instead of Bs. As of today, my GPA went up after I successfully got all As in my summer courses. I was so distracted using threads daily that I almost took dozens of classes that wouldn’t help towards getting my degree! I was able to set up realistic educational, professional, financial, and personal goals for myself.
